Thelma

This post is about our little sweetie Thelma. She is our Chihuahua, my husband and I adopted her with her sister 13 1/2 years ago when they were new born. Lately she has been in a bad way, she has leg, hip problems, she is having trouble hearing (or she is just such a grumpy old girl she doesn't listen). and now she is missing.
Tonight my husband let them out to go to the bathroom, she has to be carried down the stairs because she cannot walk up and down by herself. He let them out and went back inside for something for just a second, when he heard one of them bark. He went back out and Louise, Thelma's sister, was waiting at the bottom of the steps, he heard a rustling in the leaves up higher in our yard and just two barks and called for Thelma. She didn't come so he went to get the flashlight to search for her.
We do not have a fence. The dogs go out to do their business and we typically stay with them or they go and come right back when they are finished. They do not like it outside, especially since it is cold, they hate it.
That all began at about 6-6:30 tonight. We searched and searched the entire neighborhood. We could not find her.
I had to come to work because being it was only two hours before I was due in my supervisor said disciplinary action would be taken if I called out.  She said she didn't want to sound heartless but I would probably not be able to find her in the dark anyway. Nice. So I am working, blogging by email, hoping to ease some of the sad feelings. Hoping the night will go by super fast so I can search for her again.
My husband is scared an owl may have gotten her. She is very small, Thelma is the bigger one and she is about 4-5 pounds. We have had problems when the dogs were outside with us chicken hawks circle wanting a little piece of them. He thinks since he heard the rustling in the middle of the yard and a couple barks, and then no other sounds that an owl maybe got her. We live across the street from  woods and our lot has very large old trees in it, perfect for an owl to rest in.  I surely hope that is not the case, but she did not have time to go far unless someone or something got her. She cannot move very fast because of her leg/hip pain.
I am very sad, very, very sad.
Please pray for Thelma, that she is safe, and if she was taken or passed away somewhere she is taking that pain free walk on the Rainbow Bridge.

Oh my gosh Jennifer. I am crying now! I am so sorry for your little doggy! How sad...esp if the owl did get her...or maybe something else...we've had a couple of red fox running around our house this past week. During the summer the turkey vultures circle our dogs but once they get close they know they're not small enough!! I am so sad for you and your family. If she is gone for good she is surely running with all the other puppies...we have to put down our dalmation who is 14...this spring when the ground is not frozen...I My husband will be very, very sad but I will cry like a baby when we have our funeral for her and put her in the back yard!!...she's my husband's dog that he's had since before we met...she is getting bad too! My heart aches for you!! Hugs my friend,
patti :)

Such a horrible experience! I am so sorry for you. I hope you're able to find her. I have a 7# Maltese and the Hawks are constantly stalking her during the day. I had never thought about Owls at night!

Oh, I am so sorry. Not knowing where she is, is the most difficult part. Thinking of you.

Hi, I hope that little Thelma has been found, but if it was her time, I truly believe that animals have their place in heaven too.

Oh Jennifer,
so so sad. It is so hard when they get that old. I hope whatever happened to her it was fast and painless for her. But, don't ever give up hope ... you never know, someone may have found her. I hope so.
I have 2 Rat Terriers that are climbing up near the end of their time on this earth. I can only hope and wish they they just go to sleep.

My heart truly aches for you beloved pet.
